When Words Become the Work

Artist and designers across disciplines are often asked to use words to introduce, explain, or even justify their studio practices. This blog is created as part of a workshop that picks up where that writing leaves off, activating the moment when words become the work. Drawing from examples that explore the verbal aspects of mark making, the written word as an integral part of studio work, and words as subversive to the “business of art”, the workshop aims to support creative reinterpretations of—or entirely new criteria for—preexisting written forms; to provide a setting for constructive peer response; and to open a wider dialogue about writing in the context of art and design.
